The 12th IBDW, June 2–4, 2027, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, Maui Island, Hawaiʻi. See the preliminary schedule ↓

A Workshop Built Around Conversation

The 12th IBDW keeps one room and one conversation. Every accepted abstract is presented, every session ends with its presenters taking the room's questions together, and the meeting closes by setting the field's priorities together.

Signature Feature

Lightning Talks and Lounge Posters

Every accepted abstract takes the stage: one slide, 90 seconds, in the main session. Each block of Lightning Talks is followed by a Lounge Poster session for those same abstracts, so the conversation starts the moment the talks end. Posters stay up all three days. The Scientific Advisory Committee also invites some abstracts to give a longer proffered talk.

Case Panel

Breast Cancer Risk Board

Real de-identified cases, discussed in the style of a tumor board, asking the question a tumor board never asks: what is this woman's risk, how was it measured, and what should happen next. A panel of clinicians, scientists, and an advocate leads, and the room weighs in.

Think Tank Discussions

Each session ends with its presenters together at the front of the room for a 10-minute discussion. The moderator and the audience ask what the findings mean for screening, for risk assessment, and for the next study, and the presenters answer as a group. Key points are carried into the closing session.

Collaboration Pods

Lunch is a chance to work together. Each day, pods on specific topics share a table, so people interested in the same question can meet, compare notes, and plan joint work. Joining a pod is optional. Pick one at lunch on the first day. Pods are invited to submit a one-page idea for the closing session. Nothing is mandatory. This year's topics ↓

Live Innovation Lab

Teams take on a live data challenge during the workshop, work between sessions, show their tools at lunch on Day 2, and present results on the final day.

Community Co-Design Lab

Patient advocates and community partners co-lead a session on how risk information reaches women and their clinicians, shaping research priorities from lived experience.

Closing Session: Setting Research Priorities

The meeting ends with the whole room ranking the field's open questions, drawing on the Think Tank Discussions and any ideas the pods submit. The results are shared with participants and inform the workshop summary paper.

Collaboration Pod topics

Collaboration Pods meet at lunch. Joining is optional, and pods are invited to submit a one-page idea for the closing session. This year's topics:

  1. Ideally, what should a woman with dense breasts, or a high AI risk score, actually do next, and who tells her?
  2. Short versus long: what risk should drive screening intervals?
  3. Inclusive validation: Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, and other populations across continents and countries.
  4. Who gets which supplemental test: MRI, contrast-enhanced mammography, or ultrasound, and on what evidence?
  5. Density and AI risk change as a biomarker: a longitudinal consortium across registries and studies.
  6. Risk reduction strategies.
  7. Open data for open science: public benchmarks for models.
  8. Polygenic plus imaging: what is needed for clinical use?
  9. Trainee pod: building a career in imaging risk science, with mentors.
